René Buthaud’s ceramic works is composed of ovoid vases, often illustrated with feminine figures, but he also played with the thickness, the color of the glaze, creating abstract decors.
From 1903 to 1907, René Buthaud trains at the Bordeaux school of Fine Art where he is Paul-François Qunsac’s student, and work in a tableware workshop. Ending his studies at the Paris school of Fine Art with a degree in etching and painting in 1913, he composed his first etchings with the artist Jean-Gabriel Doumergue. Attached to ceramic tradition, he is one of those who participated in its renewal in the 1950’s, taking steps away from the industrial production.
In Bordeaux, his hometown, the Decorative Arts museum dedicated to René Buthaud a permanent monographic room, where not less than fifty works of the hand of the artist are displayed.
