RENÉ BUTHAUD
'POMONE', 1936
Important decorative composition made of six adjoining panels depicting the nymph Pomona.
Executed in polychrome under glass, with shaded gold leaf and palladium accents. The frame is in patinated metal.
Pomona is a nymph from Roman mythology, associated with fruit and orchards. Guardian of fruit trees, she devotes her life to cultivating and protecting them. Unlike other divinities, she has no taste for wild forests or hunting: she prefers enclosed, carefully tended gardens.
Her principal myth links her to Vertumnus, the god of seasons and transformation. Madly in love with her, he attempts to seduce her in many different guises—an old man, a harvester, a vintner—but she rejects him each time. Eventually, he reveals his true appearance, youthful and radiant, and Pomona agrees to marry him.
It is a myth that celebrates fertility, transformation, and the harmony between cultivated nature and the passing seasons.
