The Berrier-Milliet restaurant, a renowned establishment on the Lyon dining scene, was located at 16 rue de la République. In 1927, it underwent a major renovation as part of a broader architectural project led by Michel Roux-Spitz, a rising young architect who was commissioned to redesign the building in a distinctly modern spirit.

The restaurant, located on the upper floor, was entirely reimagined to reflect a vision of contemporary luxury, blending the clean lines of emerging modernism with an ambitious decorative program. To elevate the interior, Roux-Spitz called upon several artists, including Alfred Janniot, celebrated for his classically inspired and monumental sculptural work. On this occasion, Janniot designed a decorative scheme that featured prominently in the main dining room: monumental lacquer panels depicting L’Île d’Amour, based on his original drawings.

This redesign made the Berrier-Milliet restaurant a remarkable example of the successful fusion of architecture, decorative arts, and the art of living in 1920s Lyon.
