This exceptional dining table—crafted around 1958 in metal with a black opaline-glass top—was realized as a bespoke commission, reflecting Jules Leleu’s commitment to tailored design for each project. A similar model was executed for the Société MAREP in that same year, underscoring the exclusivity and precision of his approach.
Jules Leleu (1883–1961) rose to prominence in the interwar period as a pioneering ensemblier–decorateur, founding Maison Leleu in Paris in 1924 and earning international acclaim with a Grand Prix at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.
Over his career, Leleu executed some of the most prestigious interior decorations of his time, including the interiors of the ocean liners SS Île-de-France and SS Normandie, and designed interiors for the Palace of the Nations in Geneva..
In 1957, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique entrusted Maison Leleu with the decoration of key areas aboard the paquebot France, notably the library, the writing and reading room, and the bridge lounge.
These commissions demonstrate Leleu’s enduring influence in mid-century French design and his ongoing collaboration with the great luxury liners of the era.
Beyond landmark projects, Jules Leleu distinguished himself through his ability to deliver site-specific, tailor-made creations—each design adapted to the unique character and demands of the client's environment, whether that be maritime interiors or high-profile private and institutional settings.
This table is a testament to Leleu’s philosophy: elegant, meticulously crafted objects created with intention and harmony, serving both aesthetic and functional purpose in their given context.
