The Schneider House – Le Verre Français

Founded in the early 20th century by Charles Schneider, the Schneider house quickly established itself as one of the leading forces in the revival of French art glass. Initially rooted in the Art Nouveau tradition, Charles Schneider developed a distinctive artistic language that reached full maturity in the 1920s, in parallel with the rise of the Art Deco movement.

Based in Épinay-sur-Seine, the Schneider glassworks became renowned for their exceptional command of layered glass techniques, acid-etching, and hot-working processes, producing works distinguished by their depth, texture, and rich chromatic effects. During the interwar period, the brand Le Verre Français emerged as the signature of this production, instantly recognizable for its subtly nuanced, often mottled or powdered colors, inspired by both nature and modern design.

In the Art Deco period, the Schneider house developed an ambitious range of decorative objects and lighting designs, conceived as complete works of art in which glass interacts harmoniously with metal or wrought-iron mounts. Shown at major Parisian exhibitions and appreciated by an international clientele, these creations epitomize the decorative ideals of the 1920s and 1930s: a refined balance between artisanal craftsmanship, artistic ambition, and formal modernity.

Today, works by the Schneider house are held in numerous public and private collections and remain highly sought after for the quality of their execution, the strength of their aesthetic identity, and their pivotal role in the history of 20th-century decorative arts.
