ALEXANDRE NOLL (1890-1970)
1890 - 1970
Alexandre Henri Noll was born in Reims (east of France), the 18th of may 1890, in a caretakers family from Alsace. After have been weaver and bank employee, he created for fifty years furnishings and abstract sculptures in exotic wood. He created unique direct size shaped furniture, in different essences of wood. His polished wood is unique too, handling naturally the curves and the volumes.
In 1937, he presented some vases, jugs and dishes in polished wood at the International Exhibition in Paris. He participated regularly at the "Salon des Artistes décorateurs" in which he was member in 1939, and then at the "Salon des Réalités Nouvelles" from 1946. In the 1950's, he started carving. In 1964, he exhibited at the galerie La Demeure, in 1966 at the galerie de Messine in Paris, and disapeared four years later. He is currently represented at the museum of modern Art of Paris, and at the Beaux-Arts museum of Dijon (France).
He died the 30th of november 1970, at Fontenay-aux-Roses. An exhibition of his artworks was organized in Reims in 1973.
