RENÉ BUTHAUD (1886-1986)
Serpent Vase, circa 1930
Ovoid vase in glazed ceramic cracked polychrome "snakeskin" with geometric patterns. Signed J. Doris under the base.
H 32 cm (H 12.6 in)
HistoryFrom 1934, René Buthaud signed his works with the imaginary inscription "J.Doris", at the request of an American merchant named Salmicouri who decided to sell his works in the United States. The artist was bound by an exclusivity contract to the Galerie Rouard since 1928. It is a derivative of Douris, a famous painter of Greek vases from the 5th century BC, whose artist appreciated the work.
