ARMAND-ALBERT RATEAU
PAIR OF CAST-IRON FIREBACKS, c. 1920-1922
A pair of cast-iron fireplace back plates, executed after a design by Armand-Albert Rateau for Jeanne Lanvin's residence in Le Vésinet. Their decoration features stylised flames radiating in a fan-like composition, rising towards an upper border articulated by four large spiral volutes. The design exemplifies Rateau's distinctive ornamental vocabulary, in which vegetal forms merge into a composition of remarkable decorative restraint.
