JEAN DUNAND
VASE, c. 1914
Ovoid black-patinated copper vase with a constricted neck, accented by a bevelled nickel silver rim. The upper section of the body is decorated with a geometric reserve frieze enriched with silver inlays, composed of a rhythmic arrangement of superimposed squares and rectangles. The interplay between the deep black patina and the softened brilliance of the silver lends the decoration a subtle vibrancy, recalling the graphic rhythms of ancient textiles and architectural ornament—recurring sources of inspiration in Jean Dunand's work.
