André Arbus’s collaboration with the sculptor Vadim Androusov began in the 1930s and continued into the early 1950s. Androusov brought to Arbus’s furniture his distinctive sculptural vocabulary, inspired by the female figure and Classical mythology—sirens, Medusa heads and antique masks—often executed in patinated or gilt bronze. His sculptures were fully integrated into the architecture of the furniture, appearing as armrest supports, caryatids, handles and ornamental mounts on cabinets and chests of drawers.
This dialogue between cabinetmaking and sculpture reflects the close collaboration between artists and craftsmen that lay at the heart of Arbus’s return to the French decorative tradition. It also illustrates the exacting standards of his work, in which sculptural ornament was conceived not merely as decoration, but as an integral part of furniture distinguished by the rigor and balance of its architectural construction.
