Michel Roux-Spitz (1888–1957) was one of the leading French architects and urban planners of the twentieth century. Educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for Architecture in 1920. An enlightened collector and close associate of many of the foremost artists of his time, he assembled a remarkable collection that included this allegorical work by Jean Dupas, himself awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for Painting in 1910. Their respective careers, both distinguished by this prestigious honour, reflect the close ties that united the leading figures of French art and architecture in the early twentieth century.
