DIEGO GIACOMETTI
'BERCEAU AUX CHATS' SIDE TABLE, c. 1970
Green-brown patinated bronze coffee table, composed of four slender legs extending into uprights, each surmounted by a sculpted cat’s head. The rectangular framework is articulated by a series of fine stretchers and diagonal braces, punctuated by small hook-shaped elements. A rectangular glass top rests upon the structure.
With its slender framework, elongated legs and stylised feline heads, the table exemplifies Diego Giacometti’s distinctive sculptural and graphic vocabulary. The hieratic treatment of the cats and the geometry of the composition also evoke the art of ancient Egypt, a recurring source of inspiration throughout his work.
