THE MOUGIN BROTHERS AND NANCY IN 1925

Leading figures of Nancy ceramics, Joseph and Pierre Mougin developed a body of work at the crossroads of the École de Nancy legacy and the emerging Art Deco aesthetic. Their production of the 1920s reveals a move towards purer forms and increasingly geometric decoration, while continuing their experiments with stoneware and glazes.

This vase model appears in La Céramique, one of ten monumental panels created by Victor Prouvé for the Pavillon de Nancy et de l'Est de la France at the 1925 Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris. Dedicated to the major artistic and industrial traditions of Lorraine, the ensemble celebrated the union of art and industry and the vitality of modern creation in Nancy.

Its inclusion in Prouvé's panel thus places the model at the heart of Nancy's assertion of a distinctly modern decorative identity in 1925. The panels are now preserved in the municipal collections of Nancy.
