DIEGO GIACOMETTI
'BERCEAU AUX CHATS' SIDE TABLE, c. 1970
Green-patinated bronze coffee table, « Table Berceau, modèle aux chats », designed in 1970. The bronze structure takes the form of a rectangular cradle resting on four slender legs. Each upright is surmounted by a sculpted cat's head facing outward. The long stretchers are punctuated by small hooks from which diagonal rods are anchored, evoking a network of cords intended to restrain the cats within the structure. A rectangular glass top rests upon this remarkably light composition. The balance of the lines, the frontal treatment of the feline heads and the rigorous geometry of the design lend the piece a distinctly Egyptian character, reflecting one of Diego Giacometti's recurring sources of inspiration.
