Trained as a sculptor, Albert Cheuret made lighting one of his principal fields of experimentation during the 1920s. The contrast between bronze and alabaster became particularly characteristic of his work: the dark, sculptural density of the metal is offset by the translucency of the stone, transforming the alabaster elements into luminous diffusers. Cheuret prominently displayed these works at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where his stand was located on the Pont Alexandre III.
The Cactus model fully embodies this vocabulary. Three fan-shaped alabaster panels emerge from a strongly geometric bronze mount, whose stylised relief decoration evokes spiny vegetation. Period archival photographs show this model displayed on Albert Cheuret’s exhibition stands, documenting its place within the artist’s exhibited production.
