JEAN DUPAS (1882-1964) & EDGAR BRANDT (1880-1960)

'ALLÉGORIE DE LA PROSPERITÉ', 1927
Allegorical composition executed in ink, wash, gouache and pastel on paper mounted on board, preserved in its original wrought-iron frame designed by Edgar Brandt. Set within a monumental woodland articulated by arch-like trees draped with flowering garlands, a procession of female figures, children and symbolic animals celebrates abundance and prosperity. A bull, horse, stag and birds gather around a golden sphere, while towering trees and cascading waterfalls enhance the depth of the composition. Brilliant touches of pink, delicately dispersed throughout the foliage and draperies, enliven the scene, in which Jean Dupas combines a classical ideal with the refined stylisation characteristic of the Art Deco period. The original wrought-iron frame by Edgar Brandt extends the architectural and ornamental quality of the composition and bears witness to the collaboration between two of the foremost French decorative artists of the 1920s
